Has anyone here shipped a car long distance? If so, do you have any tips or recommendations on a company?

Why if it's sent by ship then it's a cargo, if it's sent by road then it's a shipment?

Shipment is going to a customer or store, basically the end point. Cargo is the points in between.

Check out household movers in addition to the specialized auto movers. When we moved WA to VA Allied came out a bit cheaper than the automobile haulers and it was point to point. They just pulled up, the enclosed semi trailer already had someone else's furniture and stuff in the front, drove the car on, strapped it down, and about a week later it showed up. Didn't have to do any prep and they encouraged packing it full of stuff so I saved some money on some other items that I had been planning on FedExing.

Might not want to use United Van Lines...

Most of the actual drivers are independent contractors that work for the major shipping companies, so it is tough to control exactly who you get. The main decision and information points are:

1. Level of insurance and coverage scope. I view this as most important.

2. Outside vs. inside. Note that the first time I shipped a car, I went with a covered carrier, but the most recent time (last week) I shipped an exotic and the recommendation was to go open since the exotic car shop had never had an issue.

3. If necessary to you, timing of shipment. This was never an issue for me.

4. Price.

I would also do some googling to see if you can find any information as to how a specific carrier handles claims.

FedEx Custom Critical. However they are not cheap since they aim to do the best possible job. Fully enclosed trailer with elevator, constant contact with driver, etc. The car I shipped was on a trailer with two Ferraris and a Hemi Dart. No home delivery (in my case), you must meet them in a parking lot large enough for the truck and trailer.

The condition of the paint I'd rate as shitty, so inside/outside isn't really a concern. Timing is May-July. Any time there works. The total value of the car I'd put at $3k.

I have no problem with driving a short distance to get it loaded, but my car is like a Porsche...

Air cooled flat six in the bum. But that's as far as it gets to being an exotic. :)

Gotcha. If it's a work in progress you can ship it on an open trailer for cheaper.

Well, got a quote back from them, $1300 open, $1800 enclosed. Kind of ouch.

Does it run well? For something like this maybe I'd choose "awesome road trip". :)

Yes, however I'm still pinning down things such as gear oil leaks. And it'd be really hard to drive the Dakota towing a trailer and the car at once.

Solution: ship truck, drive car, tow trailer. Get period-correct trailer for bonus points.

Check out Reliable Carriers. They are working up a shipment now, according to this story on Edmunds.com.

Stick a UPS label to it, and drive it into the lobby at your local UPS store.....
